Every board uses a different formula

There is no single national conversion. Each board and university publishes its own, and using the wrong one can shift your result by several percent — enough to matter on an application form.

Board / UniversityFormulaCGPA 8.6 becomes
CBSECGPA × 9.581.7%
VTU, Anna University(CGPA − 0.75) × 1078.5%
Mumbai University(CGPA × 7.1) + 1172.1%
GTUCGPA × 9.581.7%
Many autonomous collegesCGPA × 1086.0%

If your university is not listed, check the back of your marksheet — the conversion is usually printed there. When in doubt, ask the examination cell rather than guessing.

Where the CBSE 9.5 comes from

It is not arbitrary. CBSE analysed several years of board results, took the average marks of students scoring in each grade band, and found that dividing by 9.5 reproduced the grade points closely. The multiplier is the inverse of that.

It applies to the overall CGPA across your five main subjects, and to individual subject grade points as well. Note that CBSE stopped issuing CGPA on Class 10 marksheets from 2018 — percentages are now printed directly.

Reading the result

Most Indian universities map percentages to divisions like this:

  • Distinction — 75% and above
  • First division — 60% to 74.99%
  • Second division — 50% to 59.99%
  • Third division / Pass — 40% to 49.99%
  • Fail — below 40%

Some universities set distinction at 70%, and a few use 66.67%. Check your own regulations before writing a division on an application.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Multiply your CGPA by your board's multiplier. For CBSE that is 9.5, so a CGPA of 8.6 becomes 81.7%. Other universities subtract an offset first — pick your board above and the right formula is applied.
Is CGPA × 9.5 correct for every board?
No. It is the CBSE formula. VTU and Anna University use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, and Mumbai University uses (CGPA × 7.1) + 11. Using the wrong one can change your result by several percent.
What percentage is 8.6 CGPA?
81.7% under CBSE, 78.5% under VTU or Anna University, and 72.1% under Mumbai University.
How do I convert percentage back to CGPA?
Switch the direction dropdown to "Percentage → CGPA". The same formula is applied in reverse.
Which figure should I write on a job application?
Use the conversion your own university publishes, and say which formula you used. Most employers accept either figure provided you are consistent and can show the marksheet.
